Tom is a veteran serving from 1972 to 1975 serving in the Army. While serving he was attached to a funeral detail and performed numerous military funerals, most for military members who had served in Vietnam. This experience changed Tom’s life and has been a part of him since. This is Tom’s second ride across the state to honor the more than 1600 members who have died or have gone MIA from Wisconsin since Vietnam. He has been part of a variation of military funerals and has seen the effects that the loss of a loved one serving their country has had on the families. The sounds of the 21 gun salutes can still be heard, and the emotions of handing the flag to a loved one in honor of the sacrifice bring memory after memory that cannot be forgotten. As a reminder that we must Honor, Educate, and Heal Tom will be riding throughout the state in their memory to remind us all of the commitment and sacrifice it takes to serve and be free.
Tom has done three cross-continental rides across the United States, in 2006 competing in a race across America from Oceanside California to Atlantic City New Jersey for over 3050 miles 7 day 15 hours as part of a two-man recumbent bike team, the first ever to do so. This will be the 20th year that Tom has been part of The Highground Annual Bike Tour all on the northern route.
